['pɔpjʊlɪst 'pɑːti], eigentlich People's Party ['piːplz 'pɑːti], 1892 gegründete amerikanische Partei, mit der die vornehmlich agrarische und radikaldemokratische Protestbewegung des Westens und Südens versuchte, Einfluss auf die Bundespolitik zu nehmen. Hauptforderungen waren: Antimonopolismus, Verstaatlichung der Eisenbahnen und Telegrafengesellschaften, eine progressive Einkommensteuer sowie eine inflationistische Kredit- und Währungspolitik mit unbeschränkter Silberprägung (»free silver«). Der Präsidentschaftskandidat der Populist Party, General James Baird Weaver (* 1833, ✝ 1912), gewann 1892 rd. 1 Mio. Wählerstimmen. Bei der Präsidentschaftswahl 1896 übernahm die Demokratische Partei die Forderung nach unbeschränkter Silberprägung, unterlag aber trotz der Unterstützung durch die Populist Party, die damit und dann im Zeichen des Wirtschaftsaufschwungs an Bedeutung verlor. V. a. der Antimonopolismus ging in das Progressive Movement ein.
